Gallery: Cyclists Dismount Cambridge

Cyclists Dismount signs in and around Cambridge.

Local Transport Note 2/08 Cycling Infrastructure Design 3.6 (p20 https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/3808/ltn-2-08.pdf):

3.6 The CYCLISTS DISMOUNT sign
3.6.1 The CYCLISTS DISMOUNT sign to diagram 966 is another overused sign. On a well designed cycle facility, it is very rarely appropriate. The sign is possibly the least favoured among cyclists – each time it is used, it represents a discontinuity in the journey, which is highly disruptive.

3.6.2 In general, the sign should only be used in relatively rare situations where it would be unsafe or impracticable for a cyclist to continue riding.

3.6.3 If it looks as if the sign might be needed, practitioners should first check to see whether the scheme design could not first be modified to make its use unnecessary. In general, the sign should not be used where a cycle track joins a carriageway directly.

3.6.4 Where the sign’s use appears unavoidable, practitioners should be able to defend their decision and explain why it cannot be avoided by design.

There shouldn't be a "Cyclists Dismount" sign here.

When planners give up planning: Cyclists dismount sign on a cycle route. If the County wants to waste money on a sign here, it should be a "road crossing" warning.

NO MOTOR CYCLES - CYCLISTS DISMOUNT; NO CYCLING CYCLISTS DISMOUNT - NO MOTOR CYCLES, two sets of signs facing in different directions. There should be no such signs on a national cycle route.

Cyclists Dismount! Why?

Cyclists dismount! Why? If the County wants to waste money on a sign here, it should be a "road crossing" warning. But that is so obvious it wouldn't need a sign.

Advisory 'Cyclist Dismount' signs imposed by the county council's lawyers - if cyclists really did dismount it would grind to a halt in the rush hour, but weekend dog-walkers don't see it this way.

The Cyclists Dismount has reappeared under these cycle route signs.

Another Cyclists Dismount sign (you will now enter the main carriageway) in Orchard Park (Chariot Way with Ring Fort Road) where there should be a blue "footway" sign with the addition of an "End of Cycleway" sign.

Black then Red surfaces, yet the sign says dismount. I think the advisory "cyclists dismount" sign and blue shared use" signs need turning around, with the cyclists dismount replaced by "footway" with end of cycleway signs. From the o ... [more]

Pointless "cyclists dismount" signs at Graham Road corner with Topper Street in Orchard Park, Cambs. This "cyclists dismount" sign on the easternside of Graham Road is at the back of a shared use sign, see also #48537. The council seems to ... [more]

New pole with a "Cyclists Dismount sign" (see #31618 from July 2011) and a shared use sign on the opposite side. Orchard Park Community Council proposed this "Cyclists Dismount route" as the route for the http://iitm.be/ringfortpath . For m ... [more]

Cyclists Dismount sign - precisely where the asphalt turns red! Totally unnecessary in any case.

One of the most surreal Cyclists Dismount signs I've ever seen....

Black then Red surfaces, yet the sign says dismount. I think these signs need turning around! It was still the wrong way around in April 2013 as can be seen from the opposite side #48540.

Advisory 'Cyclists Dismount' sign just 20m short of the bike shed. Yes, that might happen. Removed by January 2011 - see #28078.

Signal pole completely blocking the narrow cycle track. This is just one of many reasons for accomodating cycling within the carriageway, not on the pavement. When converted to a toucan this pole needs to be re-positioned to minimise the ... [more]

End of contraflow lane - cyclists are supposed to dismount and walk to a zebra crossing.

Jesus Lock bridge. Direction sign for cyclists asking cyclists to dismount.

"Green Dragon Bridge", Water Street Chesterton.

Short multi-purpose pole signposting shared use and Cyclists Dismount.

'Cyclists Dismount' to pass in front of a permanently locked gate - give us a break!

'Cyclists Dismount' all around the A505/A1301 roundabout (NCN 11 signage).

Very convenient passage connecting Frazer Road / Warren Road with Ashfield Road (i.e. Milton Road with Green Dragon Bridge). But why should cyclists dismount? Another forgotten sign?

Jesus Lock Bridge. At only 1.65m wide this bridge is too narrow for a mixed use bridge. It is none the less a very useful crossing point for cyclists. Cyclists are required to dismount but most use their discetion - dismounting if the br ... [more]

Congestion on the Sheep's Green Bridge, which has not been upgraded, only the spans. This is the situation that Councillors have approved. Note the (advisory) Cyclist Dismount signs that have appeared.

Martin asks: Cyclists dismount. Why? What a silly sign. Simon replies: this is a back covering exercise by the County Council. The parapets on the bridge are probably not high / strong enough to withstand being hit by a cyclist, and so t ... [more]
